Welcome to Encore

19 May 2015, by Ilana Gelbart in Articles

Hello and welcome to the Auslan Stage Left blog — Encore!

Auslan Stage Left is an organisation dedicated to enabling and providing quality Auslan interpreted theatre, and provide training to interpreters, deaf consultants and productions in the area of theatre interpreting. As such, we have established this blog to start a community conversation about theatre, theatre interpreting, and deaf access to the arts.

We will be posting regularly about productions that we have been involved with, including interviews with audience members and behind-the-scenes with interpreters. We are also encouraging community involvement, and will be welcoming guest bloggers from the deaf community, including deaf theatregoers and Auslan interpreters, for their unique perspective on issues impacting our community.

We’d love you to get involved, so have a look around, leave a comment, even submit an article, and become part of the conversation. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Ilana Gelbart has been performing since she was 10 years old, appearing in various theatre productions and television series throughout her teens. She graduated with Honours from her Bachelor of Performing Arts at Monash University in 2012, after appearing in numerous theatre productions.

In her Honours year, Ilana worked with Auslan interpreters and members of the deaf community to research the inclusion of Auslan in mainstream theatre. She has been working with Auslan Stage Left since September 2013, and in that time has seen Auslan Stage Left grow from an idea to an incredible organisation. She looks forward to further engaging with the community to foster continual access to the theatre for the deaf community.
